For a person in Recovery, a Sponsor is the equivalent of the position that a Mentor fills for a Child!  As a Mentor guides a child through things in Life that are not always obvious and easily figured out, a Sponsor guides an Addict through things in Recovery that are not always obvious and easily figured out! It is just that Simple, and if you've chosen wisely, and are going to use the Steps in Your Recovery Plan…  You will absolutely need a Sponsor!!!

     You see… an Addict trying to Conquer this terribly confusing, overpowering, mentally challenging Disease, and all of the Changes needed to successfully get out from under its Control, is very much like a child who is experiencing Life and its many complications and mysterious situations, for the first time… Both have to not only increase their knowledge, but often have to do that accompanied by very powerful Emotions that are in conflict with their ability to remain logical in decision making!

     In Addiction, while being almost continuously influenced by the effects that the Drugs have on the Brain, emotions are most often suppressed.  When we do experience Emotion, under the influence, it is most often out of proportion, and often directly related to the Drug we use.  Many of Us remain in that state nearly continuously for periods lasting days, weeks, months or even Years.  We stop using… then we find ourselves using a Brain that is desperately trying to correct its Chemical imbalances. Then the new levels of these Neurotransmitters results in us experiencing feelings that we have become unfamiliar with.  We find ourselves in a position of having little or no coping skills for dealing with these "new" feelings.  This… This is… this is when countless numbers of Addicts Relapse back into their Addiction!  This is then when we need a Sponsor… someone who has been there and done that… and is willing to give support, advice and be comforting by having the ability to insure us that… "This too shall pass."
